How is Pottery Made?

From a lump of clay to your home.

Creating handmade ceramics is a slow process, often taking several weeks from start to finish.

Every artist has their own approach, but most pieces follow a similar journey:

1. Forming

Clay is shaped by hand, on a potter’s wheel or using moulds.

2. Drying

The piece dries slowly to prevent cracks and warping.

3. First Firing

Known as the bisque firing, this transforms the fragile clay into a strong ceramic ready for glazing.

4. Glazing

Colour, texture and surface decoration are applied using a wide variety of techniques.

5. Final Firing

The glaze melts and bonds permanently with the clay, revealing the finished piece.

6. Ready to Enjoy

Every pot is checked, finished and ready to begin a new chapter in someone’s home.
